Historic Grand Restaurants, splendid hotel lobbies, modern lounges, cosy taverns with stone pine panelling, iconic classics, mountaintop restaurants and simple pubs are some of the locations to choose from. In terms of cuisine, you'll be spoilt for choice too: besides gourmet food – the restaurants in and around St. Moritz rack up 270 GaultMillau points all told – you will find typical dishes from neighbouring Italy, regional favourites such as «capuns», and Swiss evergreens such as fondue and raclette. And countless bars, cafés and lounges await with club sandwiches, panini, and cakes around the clock. In short, the local fare is every bit as international as the St. Moritz Gourmet Festival, which is held every winter.
The newcomers: «IGNIV» and «Kulm Country Club»
IGNIV by Andreas Caminada is one of the latest additions to the restaurant scene in St. Moritz. The Swiss three-star chef opened his second fine-dining-cum-sharing-experience «nest» at the Badrutt's Palace Hotel in winter 2016/2017. The «Kulm Country Club», based in the Kulm Hotel's historic ice rink pavilion, also opened its doors in 2017. Norman Foster, world-renowned British architect and St. Moritz habitué, renovated and extended the building that dates back to 1905.
Unexpected high spots
True to form, St. Moritz has a few culinary surprises in store. Such as the world's largest whisky bar: «Devil's Place», at the Hotel Waldhaus am See, boasts a selection of 2,500 whisky varieties; the notable whisky collection has been listed by the Guinness World Records on several occasions. Or, take Hatecke's «haute-couture Salsiz» (salsiz is a traditional cured sausage). The local producer of dry cured meats runs a bistro in St. Moritz's pedestrian area that could easily be mistaken for a gallery. Or, the world's best «cremeschnitte», according to the New York Times: this delectable puff pastry, Chantilly and custard cream dessert is the hallmark of the in place on the mountain «El Paradiso». Or, yet, the cool former workers' quarters «La Baracca» at the car park of the Signal cableway, celebrating improvisation in lieu of perfection.
Engadin's sweet tradition
Would you have guessed? The confectioners from the canton of Grisons – particularly those from the Engadin – were long considered throughout all of Europe as the masters of their craft. Forced to emigrate due to economic hardship, these down-to-earth men from the mountains won the hearts of sweet tooths all over, from Spain to Russia. Around 1740, over 3,000 of Venice's residents were natives of Grisons. Many of them opened up shop in the lagoon city baking and selling confectionery along with serving coffee – in fact, they are considered the first people to have served coffee to the public, as a drink intended to be savoured rather than for its nutritional value. The most enjoyable way to re-live this coffee tradition today is by pairing it with an Engadin walnut tart…

Elegant: Afternoon tea at the Grand Hotels
St. Moritz is famous for its grand hotels. Few people are aware, though, that the lobbies of these luxury hotels are open to the public and afford a perfect retreat for coffee, tea or drinks at almost any time of the day or night. You can enjoy a club sandwich, too, or even a proper high tea. For that, best head to the Suvretta House, the Badrutt's Palace Hotel, the Kulm Hotel, the Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains, or the Carlton Hotel.
The classic: Engadin walnut tart
The scrumptious Engadin walnut tart is the ultimate guilty pleasure and the one thing not to be missed food-wise. Generations of local confectioners have continued to refine this speciality filled with a creamy caramel and rounded off with chunky walnuts. The result is a baking tradition that visitors have carried back to the four corners of the world. Many restaurants and cafés will have the Engadin walnut tart on their menus. Hanselmann and Hauser, in St. Moritz Dorf, are two confectioner's that sell the packaged product for bringing back home.
The original: the St. Moritz Gourmet Festival
The first-ever gourmet festival was held in St. Moritz in 1994. It is the brainchild of local star chef Reto Mathis. Visiting chefs from around the world have been demonstrating their culinary geniuses in St. Moritz, come every January. The St. Moritz Gourmet Festival is held at traditional first-class and luxury hotels in the Upper Engadin as well as at novel event locations. Packages including tickets for the events and accommodation are available for the festival week.
